GBAx.com review of the GBA MP3 Player 21/01/03
Manufacturer: Kemco - Official Nintendo Product
Release date: 01/01/03

I'll be honest with you here, this thing has been lying about my office for days waiting to be reviewed, just another mp3 player I thought. And a rather expensive one at that. But I was so wrong as I discovered when I started to play with it this morning, its much more than a normal MP3 player.

Obviously the first thing that's different is it connects to the GBA, using the GBA screen to give you what is almost certainly the coolest portable MP3 player screen ever, at first I was instantly worried because it was in Japanese but I quickly realised that the icons were (thank heavens) in English. Another concern was I would have to dig out my compact flash writer for the PC to write some MP3's onto the bundled card - but then I saw the RECORD MP3 button! This baby can record mp3's straight from a CD player, or in my case, my laptop. So a couple of minutes playing Phil Collins (seriously, but seriously ;) and a little NWA just to equal the balance into the GBA and it was ready to try, while it recorded it played the music through the GBA speakers and also showed a nice little winamp style bouncing equaliser to show it was working along with an animation showing music flying from a CD to the GBA :)

OK, so everything is done and its on the CompactFlash, press the back button on the GBA and you have the options of playing it normally (with winamp style scrolling name + cool music effects, volume, skins, the whole lot) and since this is fresh from Japan the Karaoke mode which lets you record your voice over the song, something I was not planning on trying :) and there is also a voice only recorder which I assume uses a lower bit rate to record. Speaking of Bit rates this supports them all (inc VBR) if you program the card on your PC, or you can choose from 64 -> 128 recording on the GBA itself. There are also various skins and thing ready to use for the screen appearance.

But that's not ALL this has to offer, as I was about to discover on taking the photos and deciphering the Japanese manual that comes with it (don't worry, were colour lasering an English version for you all as I write) I noticed a photo of the MP3 add on by itself with buttons on it...

I unplugged it from the GBA and had a look... sure enough there are all the control buttons on the unit itself, I pressed 'on' and it sprung into life and started playing the MP3 with no GBA attached! Well this was unexpected, it even has a flashing light which glows to the music! So, its also a totally independent MP3 player too! I then spent the day with it in my pocket listening to tracks and I still am now while writing this review (although I'm really starting to hate Phil Collins now) the part that links to the GBA doubles up as a belt clip, very nice indeed.

That's the player on my belt.

Yes its a bit expensive, but it IS an official Nintendo product and is very cool. One thing I would recommend is to get a bigger Compact flash card (although you probably already have one if you have a digital camera), they are so cheap for 128Meg these days its well worth it to store a good few hours of music, the unit is powered by a single AA batter (included) which seems to last a LONG time.
